dataMD[1] = new data("images/collaboration/02miles_d_l.jpg","Douglas Miles                                                             November 1997

"I want to thank ATLATL and NMAI for inviting me to come see the collections and holdings here in the George Gustav Heye Center and the Research Branch. It's been real important to me.

Somebody asked me, 'What has been your most positive experience since you've been here?' To tell you the truth, I've had a lot of them. I've kind of narrowed it down to one: visiting the collection. For me it was heart rending to see the work of our ancestors"")
dataMD[2] = new data("images/collaboration/03miles_d_l.jpg",""To see the wealth and vastness of the collection was overwhelming for me at times and especially on the last day because, if you never knew your grandparents and if they could come back and talk to you, that's the experience I felt in the collection.

Seeing the Apache moccasins, the Apache dresses, the pouches, the clothing, it was as if my grandparents and ancestors said to me something about what they were doing and how they were living back at the turn of the century when they were being hunted by the United States Government."")
dataMD[3] = new data("images/collaboration/04miles_d_l.jpg",""The fight for Apache independence, to me, is important. I live in San Carlos, I work in San Carlos, and a lot of the kids I work with are from San Carlos. For Apache people our identity is really entwined in our history, and it even shows today in what my people can be considered to be in overt ways. Maybe in the way people are approached when they come on the reservation.

Sometimes (I don't know how it is in other communities) people in our community don't like outsiders to come in because, after 500 years of oppression, genocide, and imprisonment you start thinking twice when people come into your territory, and I think a lot of tribes could say that.quot;")
dataMD[4] = new data("images/collaboration/05miles_d_l.jpg",""Because I live in the community and work with the kids and I'm proud of our heritage, most of my painting is Apache images. Turn of the century Apaches, Apache women, but mostly, I've been focusing on Apache warriors and Apache dancers. The warrior is important. It's an important image in Apache history. It's important in American history. Geronimo, Cochise, Naiche; some of the great Apache leaders. Their greatness is not yet fully realized by America. When I went to school there were posters of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson, but I didn't see a poster of Geronimo or Mangus, or Naiche, or Sitting Bull, or Tecumseh, or other Native American leaders who were all great- great orators, spokesmen, great educators, so I decided to focus on that in my art work to lift up my people."")
dataMD[5] = new data("images/collaboration/06miles_d_l.jpg",""This is an original piece of two Apache Crown Dancers. It was an exercise for me of color and composition. I listen to a lot of music and have been studying a lot of album cover art and a lot of posters from movies. Posters and album covers have immediate impact on the buyers or on the person who loves the music. So, that's what I was trying to do, to have immediate visual impact with minimum color and with just the two dancers. That's what I try to do in all my painting, to just have a real graphic portrayal of Apache people. The medium that I use is pen and ink, Prisma-color pencil and it's all done on a smooth paper."")
dataMD[6] = new data("images/collaboration/07miles_d_l.jpg",""The White Mountain Native American Arts Festival takes place in the White Mountains, not too far from where I live. It's a competition. I compete, I loose, I compete. One year I got picked and this was the painting. I was so happy and relieved. They said, 'Hey we like your work! You won!' After the competition a collector came and purchased it."")
dataMD[7] = new data("images/collaboration/08miles_d_l.jpg",""This was the 1995 Pueblo Grande Museum Indian Market poster. Having grown up around Phoenix, knowing the museums and libraries, it was an honor being picked to do this poster. It's of two Apache musicians and I call it Apache Music."")
dataMD[8] = new data("images/collaboration/09miles_d_l.jpg",""It has the Apache flute player and Apache water drum, moccasins, and Apache beaded pouch. A lot of these things I researched in the Bronx at the Research Branch. There, they've got the moccasins, the pouches, and Apache war caps. They've got belts and drums. This was one of the main reasons I wanted to come- to see these items that I've never seen before and hopefully they'll live on through my art work.

I like music. I really love the work of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, people who were making history not too far from here. And so, I wanted to show the music in Apache peoples lives too. It's always important- the songs, the flute and the dance, the colors."")
dataMD[9] = new data("images/collaboration/10miles_d_l.jpg",""This was fun. I like it because of all the colors. I've seen a lot of Japanese wood block prints and the people are always wearing big kimonos or big robes, so I was playing around with the whole idea of these big robes or kimono type blankets on these figures.

This was done in Prisma-color pencils, pen and ink, and acrylic paint. It's approximately 2'x3'. We took it to a presentation at my daughter's school and one of her teachers liked it and bought it."")
dataMD[10] = new data("images/collaboration/11miles_d_l.jpg",""This is a small piece. It represents what I do a lot. It's of a single Apache Warrior."")
dataMD[11] = new data("images/collaboration/12miles_d_l.jpg",""I like a lot of animation art and graffiti art. I like the stylized design element in what I do."")
dataMD[12] = new data("images/collaboration/13miles_d_l.jpg",""This dancer is another study of album cover art and movie posters-the way the figure is cut off on the side. I put little Fire Dancers at the bottom. The main colors are red, yellow, blue, and white."")
dataMD[13] = new data("images/collaboration/14miles_d_l.jpg",""I'd been looking at a lot of Japanese animation art too. I really like it. So, I was trying to take some of their ideas and put them into what I do as far as talking about Apache people and Apache history, but in a contemporary form. I know a lot of kids who are into graffiti art, and Japanese animation is really "big" with a lot of graffiti artists. I just like it because of the simple line."")
dataMD[14] = new data("images/collaboration/15miles_d_l.jpg",""This piece is kind of self explanatory. It's the way a lot of our kids dress where I'm from and if you go downtown you'll see a lot of kids dressed this way, too. The words on the bottom are graffiti type lettering- Naiche, Cochise, Chato, Nana, Geronimo, Victorio. I put it down there for two reasons: one, to educate the kids who might see this and two, to communicate to the kids about who their real leaders and role models could be. I don't want to say should, because you really shouldn't preach to kids. All you can do is kind of gently lead them.

A lot of kids in San Carlos, if you ask them how Tupac Shakur died- they'll say he got shot ten times. They'll tell you what kind of car he was driving, what city he was in, who he was with, and how many guys were with him. If you ask them how did Biggy Smalls die- they'll say he was in this kind of car and in this city and so on and so forth, but if you ask them how did Geronimo die- a large percentage will say I don't know. If you ask them how did Victorio, Cochise, or Naiche die- they'll say I don't know. Some of them will know, because they're getting Apache history in High School now, but some will not."")
dataMD[15] = new data("images/collaboration/16miles_d_l.jpg",""Not that I'm down on Rap music and Hip Hop, the art form itself, but I'm down on the media portrayal, the negative images, and the negative stereotypes that some of our kids are beginning to align themselves with. This kind of self destructive attitude that can come through some of the music, not all of it, but some of it. So this is my way to educate our kids, through this kind of art work."")
dataMD[16] = new data("images/collaboration/17miles_d_l.jpg",""This is basically the same idea- Native American kids. The way they dress. The way we look today with no feathers, no beadwork, no leather pouches, but very much Native American kids- back packs, big clunky shoes, baggy jeans. It's their own identity statement, it says who they are, 'We're somebody, we're important.'"")
dataMD[17] = new data("images/collaboration/18miles_d_l.jpg",""However, I got a lot of bad P.R. in my own community when I started painting things like this and putting it on T-shirts. Teachers, educators, and policemen said, 'You're promoting gang activity.' I said, 'No I'm not, you are. Those are your kids and you buy them those clothes, I don't. Just because they dress like that doesn't mean they're in a gang, it's just the way they dress.' It's not a gang thing, it's a kid thing. It's young men and young women coming of age, looking for a place in the world and trying to get a sense of identity."")
dataMD[18] = new data("images/collaboration/19miles_d_l.jpg",""This is also the same idea. It's highly stylized. It's got graffiti writing of the different chiefs. I do this more so for the kids in my community and other people who understand what I'm talking about, because kids will respond to art. They'll respond to various mediums more than they'll respond to you or me sitting there talking to them. They have to see something, so this is just trying to make the best use of the gift or talent that I have and then impacting the kids that I work with the best way, is how I look at it.

I like all kinds of art, so coming here was a big thrill for me. It was real inspiring. I appreciate everyone sharing their expertise and wisdom with me. Everyone has been really helpful.&quot")
