I'm a Yaqui Indian from Scottsdale, Arizona. I attended Arizona State University in the 1970's and I received my graduate degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1985. I'm an abstract painter and illustrator. I've been here for 17 days and it has been a great opportunity for me to be here. This has been one of the greatest cultural and artistic experiences that I've had and I feel lucky to have been chosen by Atlatl and NMAI to participate in this program. My research has been based on imagery of cultural objects related to the cosmos and I have looked at work from my tribe and other tribes"")
dataN0[2] = new data("images/collaboration/N0003_l.jpg",""In the old days the Yaqui believed that when you died, you went to the universe-the stars. The sun was the father and the mother was the moon. We have ancient information from religions about our beginnings in the universe. What people knew intuitively, scientists are now proving as fact. I think that this is a good basis for my research and I feel it's important for me. The more we find out about our universe will directly relate to what we are and who we are. "")
dataN0[3] = new data("images/collaboration/N0004_l.jpg",""It seems like there's a resurgence of spirituality in this country and in the world. Once you experience this you get a sense of wonder beyond our biosphere - the earth. You realize that we came from out there in the universe and all the religions point to that in their metaphors - Indian religions certainly and in Buddhism and in Christianity.

The slides of my paintings you are about to see are based on nature. They have to do with our religion before Christianity. Now I'm expanding from the smaller natural system here to the larger natural system out there in the universe which I think is a natural progression for me."")

It's based on the concept of painting not only this smaller natural world, but also the larger natural world of the cosmos. I hope to continue working this way for a long time; to see how it develops.

This year, when I finish my Community Project (as part of my NMAI residency), there'll be a show of my work. The show will open at the American Indian Contemporary Arts in San Francisco this December. I want to travel to Arizona and do projects with Yaqui kids."")
